Spring Repair for Loma Linda's 1980s Garage Doors
Loma Linda homes mostly went up around 1983, a few years past Redlands's own 1981 median - enough to shift which spring and drum you'll find behind the panel.
The Symptom
The door won't budge, or it starts up and drops right back down - that's a spring, almost every time. You might have heard a bang from the garage sometime in the last day or two; that's the spring letting go, and it's louder than people expect for how small the part is. Sometimes there's no bang at all, just a door that feels twice as heavy overnight and an opener straining against it. If you try the manual release and the door still won't lift by hand without real effort, don't force it - a torsion spring under tension that's only partially failed can still move fast and hard.

Parts We Carry
Redlands as a whole sits on a median build year of 1981, but Loma Linda's houses lean a touch newer, clustering around 1983. That gap matters more than it sounds.
Torsion replaced extension mounts
By the early-to-mid 1980s, builders across this corner of the valley had mostly moved off extension springs mounted above the track and onto torsion springs on a shaft over the door head. We carry both, because a street built in 1979 and a street built in 1985 can sit three minutes apart out here, but we load the truck knowing torsion is the better bet for a Loma Linda call.
Holdout extension springs stocked
We stock standard torsion springs in the wire sizes that match 7-foot and 8-foot doors from that era, plus the older extension-style springs and safety cables for the holdouts that never got upgraded.
Oversized shafts ordered in
What we don't keep on the truck is anything oversized for a custom or commercial door - those get ordered once we've measured the shaft and drum in person, and that's a day or two wait, not a same-visit fix.
How Long You Are Without the Door
A broken spring doesn't mean a broken opener - the motor usually still runs, it just can't lift the weight alone, and the chain or belt can strip trying.
Two-hour single spring job
Most single-spring jobs on a standard double door, torsion or extension, run under two hours once we're on site with the right wire gauge in hand. Doors with two torsion springs take a little longer because we replace both even if only one failed; uneven spring age is how you end up with the same call six months later.
Nonstandard doors add time
The one thing that stretches the timeline is a non-standard door - something wider, taller, or insulated heavier than the 1980s norm - where we have to confirm the spring size before cutting the old one loose.
Drive time built in
We travel to Loma Linda from Redlands, about four miles up the road, so there's drive time built into any appointment, but it's not a separate dispatch wait once we're headed your way.
How We Fix It
We start by checking which side the spring failed on and whether the cable or drum took damage on the way down - a snapped torsion spring can whip a cable off its drum, and if that's happened, the cable needs replacing too, not just the spring. For torsion setups, which cover most of the 1983-era stock, we unwind the broken spring off the shaft with winding bars, pull both springs if the pair is mismatched in age, and set new springs to the door's actual weight rather than just swapping like for like. For the older extension-spring doors still around on earlier-built lots, we replace the spring and check the safety cable running through it - a cable that's missing or frayed is a real injury risk if the spring ever lets go again. Either way we cycle the door a dozen times before we call it done, checking balance by hand with the opener disconnected.
